The GSMA, a prominent global mobile association, has identified Indonesia, alongside India, as a central focus for the advancement of 5G technology in the Asia Pacific region. In response to this prioritization, the Indonesian government has undertaken substantial initiatives, such as conducting spectrum auctions and establishing digital protection policies aimed at enhancing regional trust and showcasing its leadership role.

This commitment to progress in the telecommunications sector was notably highlighted during a strategic meeting that took place in Jakarta between Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid and Julian Gorman, who serves as the Head of GSMA Asia Pacific. Such collaborative efforts indicate a robust and strategic approach toward the digital transformation and technological innovation that 5G promises to deliver.

“Indonesia is one of the world’s five largest economies in the next generation. Indonesia’s role in shaping the 5G ecosystem will determine the future of Asia Pacific,” said Julian Gorman. GSMA assessed that the success of 5G is not only about technology, but also about the government’s courage to unite the industry ecosystem, operators, and society.

The Indonesian government has shown concrete commitment. “We are not only focused on building networks, but also building trust. Child protection, eradicating online fraud, and simplifying the industry are priorities in my first year,” said Meutya Hafid. This year, the government is preparing a spectrum auction to catch up and even surpass neighboring countries in the 5G sector.

GSMA highlights the urgency of moving quickly. Vietnam has led the way with fiscal incentives and spectrum cost cuts that have accelerated 5G. Indonesia, with full executive support and bold reforms, is seen as capable of following and even surpassing that lead. “Success in 5G in Asia is about having the courage to bring a big vision, not just building infrastructure,” said Julian Gorman.

Indonesia is currently at a crucial juncture where it can demonstrate its capability as a regional leader by actively promoting a digital ecosystem that is secure, inclusive, and trusted for all its citizens. The government has made it clear that this ambitious transformation cannot be achieved by operators and industry stakeholders alone; rather, it requires a concerted national effort that involves multiple sectors working together.

By fostering robust partnerships with global organizations such as GSMA, Indonesia is well-positioned to enter the digital decade with a significant and influential role within the Asian continent. This initiative reflects a broader vision of not just enhancing technological capabilities, but also ensuring that the benefits of digitalization are accessible to everyone in the country.
